The 19-year-old star runner from East Northport arrived in front of the school to hear chants from nearly 800 students waving American flags, custom-made signs and life-size cutouts of his face.
“It was as out of control as you’d want the students to get,” school principal Tim Hoss told Patch.

Mikey, who graduated from Northport Middle School in 2011, hugged former teachers and took selfie after selfie with the paralympic gold medal around his neck.
Eighth graders met up with Mikey in the auditorium where he answered many of their questions. The autistic runner showed that he inspires others not only through his actions, but his words as well.
“Life moves by so fast,” Mikey said. “When you go through your high school journey, find the passion you love and never give up.”
Mikey says he admires American runners who medaled in the Rio Olympics like Matthew Centrowitz, Evan Jager and Clayton Murphy. He hopes to be alongside them in Tokyo 2020.
Next stop for Brannigan is the White House to meet President Obama on Wednesday. All of the American medal winners in the Paralympics will get the chance to shake the President’s hand.
Edie Brannigan, Mikey’s mother, said the President may do something extra for Mikey since he is the first American 1,500 meter runner with autism to win a Gold Medal in the Paralympics.
Edie said coming back to Mikey’s alma mater was one of the most exciting moments from this paralympic journey. “We wouldn’t be where we are now without Northport Schools,” Edie said.
