$3.3M To Repair Stone Walls On 9W

Expect lane shifts during daytime hours, and alternating one-way traffic controlled by a temporary signal overnight.

Work is underway on a $3.3 million project to repair and replace a damaged stone retaining wall on State Route 9W in Haverstraw. The wall, which was hit by falling rock, will be repaired where possible and sections will be replaced as necessary.

“Weather often impacts our transportation system and we need to remain vigilant in our responsibility to keep highways safe for New York’s residents and visitors,” New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Matthew J. Driscoll said in the announcement. “Repairing this stone wall, and all the other road repairs funded by Governor Cuomo, allows motorists to more safely access the many businesses and neighborhoods along Route 9W.”

Preliminary work began in the spring, with the bulk of construction occurring this summer while school is out of session. Temporary concrete barriers currently in place will be removed as part of the project. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of November 2017. “The Village is quite happy that the DOT has begun the repair of the Route 9W retaining wall," Haverstraw Village Mayor Michael F. Kohut said. "Once completed, it will improve the safety and appearance of the road. We hope for an expeditious project and the return to normal traffic conditions soon.”

Traffic will be maintained on Route 9W with lane shifts during daytime hours, and alternating one-way traffic controlled by a temporary traffic signal during overnight hours (9 p.m. to 6 a.m.).

Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski said, “It’s critical infrastructure upgrades like these that ensure the safety of both motorists and residents. I want to thank the Department of Transportation (DOT) for addressing this damage with the necessary repairs. I look forward to continuing to work with DOT to address any future infrastructure needs throughout Rockland. Maintaining our state roads and local infrastructure is paramount.”

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.

Senator Bill Larkin said, “The repairs being made to this retaining wall will be important in maintaining the public safety for those who work, live and visit the Town of Haverstraw. Supervisor Howard Phillips and I have advocated tirelessly to ensure that this project would be completed as soon as possible. We are all pleased that the New York State Department of Transportation will have this vital infrastructure improvement completed in the near future.”

In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual's driver's license.
