Design Input Wanted for Nyack Skateboard Plaza
Village and skatepark designers invited the public to weigh in on conceptual design plans Aug. 6.

A workshop to gather public input on the new Nyack Skateboard Plaza will take place on August 6, 2014 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm in the Nyack Village Hall. City officials and members of Stantec’s Action Sports team will use the session to gather ideas and information for the design of the skateboard plaza.
Participants will be invited to review several alternative concepts and rank pros and cons of each. This will be followed by an interactive small group discussion and design input session about those concepts.
“We design wheel-friendly parks like these across the US, and the best ideas often come from these community workshops,” says Mike McIntyre, principal and lead designer with Stantec’s Action Sport team. “These sessions not only help us hone in on specific features, but also get a feel for the community and how to create a park that reflects the local culture.”

“We hope people will attend the public workshop and share their ideas with our design team to make our skate plaza a fun and dynamic place that skaters of all ages can enjoy,” says Nyack Mayor Jen White.
The initial plans call for a 5,000-square-foot, custom concrete park along the banks of the Hudson River in Memorial Park. Additionally, the Nyack Skateboard Plaza has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation, headed by skateboard legend Tony Hawk, and was the beneficiary of a fundraising concert by local punk band The Misfits which raised $22,000. In addition to charitable support, the project has an overwhelming amount of support from town residents, as evidenced by the over 900 signatures on the petition to have the park built.
