Fireworks between County Exec, Lawmakers, Hurt Nyack, Piermont, Haverstraw

The Nyack Free Press reports money for last year's New Year's Eve display of pyrotechnics has still not been paid.

County Executive Ed Day asked the Rockland County Legislature to approve a bill his predecessor had incurred—using tourism money from the state to cover New Year’s Eve fireworks in Nyack, Piermont and Haverstraw in 2013, reports the Nyack Free Press.

But though the legislative committee agreed, they apparently did so while making pointed remarks about giving money for fireworks while promoting fiscal austerity and trying to lay off county employees (despite the fact that the source for the fireworks money was a state tourism grant, not from Rockland county funds).

Day then asked to have the resolution pulled since no committee member supported it; when lawmakers passed it instead, he vetoed the bill, Bill Demarest reports.
