Haverstraw Man Cheated Two Doctors Of $339,812
The former police officer claimed the funds would be used for financial investments in real estate properties.

A Haverstraw resident who is a former Yonkers police officer was sentenced on grand larceny, scheme to defraud, and criminal tax fraud charges on Thursday.
Mario Sasso was sentenced before Westchester County Court Judge Barry Warhit Thursday to four concurrent terms of 1 to 3 years in state prison for the following:
- Two counts of Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, class C felonies
- Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree, a class E felony
- Criminal Tax Fraud in the Third Degree, a class D felony
Three Judgments and Orders of Restitution were signed by the court for a total of $339,812, Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced.

Between December 2012 and May 2014, Sasso stole over $300,000 from two Greenburgh doctors--approximately $196,535 from one victim and $126,513 from the other--by fraudulently claiming the funds would be used for financial investments in real estate properties in Yonkers and the Bronx. Instead he diverted the money for his personal use.
Sasso also failed to remit over $10,000 in taxes to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance on the money he stole for the taxable year 2013.

The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office worked in cooperation with the Greenburgh Police Department on the investigation, as well as the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
Assistant District Attorney Berit Huseby of the Investigations Division Public Integrity Bureau prosecuted the case.
Sasso pleaded guilty to the charges in October 2018.
