Hiker Killed Crossing Parkway At Appalachian Trail
The 66-year-old woman was out Sunday with family and friends, New York State police said.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — A hiker was killed crossing the Palisades Interstate Parkway Sunday at midday.
New York State police said at 11:45 a.m., Galina Surman of Staten Island was hiking with family and friends when they crossed the highway.
Surman, 66, was hit by a northbound 2010 Acura in the passing lane of the narrow 4-lane highway, which in northeast Rockland County runs mostly inside Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain State Park.

When troopers arrived they assisted people performing life-saving measures, but none were successful and Surman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The parkway was shut down northbound at Exit 16, Lake Welch Drive, during the investigation and cleanup.

The operator of the vehicle was not impaired and there are no charges pending, police said.
State police were assisted at the scene by Stony Point EMS, New York State Police Park Police, New York State Park Rangers, and the Town of Stony Point Police Department.
