Local Communities in Top 100 'Genius Places' List: Time

The number of patents issued by companies was compared to the population. How did Nyack-Piermont do?

Two Hudson Valley communities made Time magazine’s “100 Most Genius Places in America” list.

Tarrytown came in at No. 40, and White Plains at No. 84, both in Westchester County.

Authors David Johnson and Chris Wilson examined the number of patents issued from 1976 to 2015 and factored in the population of the communities.

Tarrytown had a total of 1,970 patents over the 40-year period, giving it 4.3 patents per 10,000 population.

The top five companies in the Tarrytown/Greenburgh area are Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc., Ciba Specialty Chemicals Corporation, Bayer Healthcare LLC, Technicon Instruments Corporaton and Bayer Corporation, according to Time.

White Plains had a total of 4,689 patents for 2.3 patents per 10,000 population.

Its five top companies, according to Time, are Texaco Inc., General Foods Corporation, Texaco Chemical Company, AMF Incorporated and Texaco Development Corporation.

The No. 1 “Most Genius City,” according to Time, is Princeton, NJ.
