Why she rocks: On the day that my 44-year-old son, Ben, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008, his first words to me from his bed at Nyack Hospital were: “Mom, if I should die, don’t hover, don’t smother. Let Liz do what Liz has to do.”

Through all his pain and anguish over the unexpected diagnosis, his primary thought was to express his trust in Liz and to protect her from being overwhelmed by a meddling mother-in-law. Ben passed away just four months later. Though it’s really hard, I’ve tried my best to follow Ben’s directive and Liz has been graciously kind and understanding on those many occasions when I have overstepped my bounds.

As a single mom, she’s raising the boys to become fine young men, doing everything that needs to be done. And she is doing it all with great energy, intelligence, perseverance, courage and love. While working two jobs, she’s had to take care of many things often done by dads. As they entered their pre-teens, and now young adulthood, she made sure the boys learned how to shave and tie a tie and learn the facts of life.

She is shepherding the older boy’s way through high school graduation, current studies at RCC and whatever lies ahead. She’s now on the college search trail with the younger boy. Even amidst all this, she’s always there for her siblings and friends and for me whenever I need help or advice with anything great or small. She really puts the “daughter” in daughter-in law! Liz is undoubtedly one of the greatest moms of all time. I know it, her family and friends know it, and it would be a nice treat for the community to recognize her as a “Superstar Mom” as well.
