Nyack Schools Hold Off on Breath Tests for Students
They heard some good arguments against their proposed policy, according to news reports.

In its fifth meeting on the subject, the Nyack Board of Education decided to table their controversial proposal to give breathalyzer tests to students and guests suspected of being drunk at school events.
The Orangetown Daily Voice reported that students and parents turned out in force at Tuesday’s meeting. Their arguments against the policy ranged from legal to skeptical.

The school trustees had said they were committed to preventing alcohol abuse and educating students about the dangers of alcohol abuse and underage drinking.
As one commenter said on Patch, “This might sound good to some, and I’m not doubting the intentions of those who support this, but it’s so embarrassingly naïve and foolhardy. If you want to help folks, help folks. I’ve little doubt that everyone already knows who the abusers are who need help, and if the adults don’t know, you just found your problem. Stop treating the students like you don’t trust them. They’ll be making their own decisions soon. Help them make wiser ones.”
