Zebrowski Announces Candidacy for District Attorney

He wants to replace former Rockland DA Thomas Zugibe, who was elected to a judgeship in November.

WEST NYACK, NY U2014 Assembly Member Ken Zebrowski announced his candidacy for Rockland County District Attorney Sunday at the West Nyack Fire House.

The former office-holder, Thomas Zugibe, was elected in November to the state Supreme Court in New York's 9th Judicial District.

Speaking to a crowd of more than 250 supporters including family, friends, leading Rockland Democrats and elected officials, Zebrowski vowed to continue his career-long commitment to strengthening the criminal justice system - ensuring it is fair, transparent, and serves all the members of the Rockland community equally.

“From taking on government corruption, to passing the Child Victims Act to protecting the most vulnerable among us, including victims of domestic violence and harassment, I’ve spent my career working to make Rockland safer and fairer for all our families," he said in an announcement of his candidacy. "I will be a reform-minded, progressive District Attorney who will take the office into a new and modern era. A District Attorney should be concerned first and foremost that real justice is served in all cases, and that’s the mentality I will bring as the next chief prosecutor of Rockland, the county where I was born, have lived my whole life and where I’m raising a family."

He is now a senior member of the state Assembly Codes and Judiciary Committees and, as a lawmaker, said he has worked on many critical issues in the criminal justice system.

Among the highlights, he named helping negotiate the “raise the age” bill in the 2018 budget and co-sponsoring a bill that would seal the records of low-level marijuana convictions. He also said he supports ending a cash bail system that imprisons poor defendants before trial while the wealthy walk free. He has authored several bills that empower victims of domestic violence, sexual harassment and sexual assault including a new sexual coercion crime that became law last year.

Zebrowski also named several important local issues he has worked on, including the North Rockland debt crisis, the appointment of monitors in the East Ramapo School District and ensuring that local governments are properly enforcing building and fire codes.

“I want to bring a new outlook, a new philosophy and a new energy to the District Attorney’s office. One that doesn’t look at the job of District Attorney as merely filing court papers and winning a case. But one that seeks justice,” Zebrowski said. “As your next District Attorney, my office will show that we can both protect and respect the community."

The General Election for District Attorney will be held Nov. 5, 2019. If there is a Democratic Primary, it will be held on June 25.
