The Office of Unclaimed Funds helped individuals find 29 unclaimed accounts at Assemblywoman Galef's annual Senior Forum
Assemblywoman Sandy Galef hosted a Senior Forum in Cortlandt on July 14th. The forum had a number of guest speakers, one of whom was Thomas DiNapoli, New York State Comptroller who presented at the event and assisted in the process of finding unclaimed funds belonging to the attendees. Out of the approximate 110 people present at the forum, 29 attendees were able to uncover unclaimed funds. Galef said; “I am thrilled so many of our attendees at my Senior Forum were able to find unclaimed funds. This helped to make the forum a success and I am very grateful to Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli for his help.”
Unclaimed funds are dormant accounts holding a sum of money, the majority of which belong to forgotten bank accounts. The total amount of unclaimed funds in New York State is $14 billion, as of June 2016. In Westchester County alone there is $240,404,699 spread out amongst 472,908 accounts. In Putnam County, there is a total of $12,417,614 spread amongst 33,174 accounts. These dormant bank accounts are reported to the New York State Comptroller’s office, where it is possible to discover any unclaimed funds.
