2nd Storm Worse Than the 1st: New NWS Advisories

The Mid-Hudson Valley will deal with an Alberta Clipper before a low-pressure system brings heavier snow Tuesday night into Wednesday.

New Winter Weather Advisories issued by the National Weather Service before dawn Tuesday supersede Monday's Winter Weather Advisories for Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester and Ulster counties. The snowfall in the region Tuesday-Wednesday is actually coming from two weather systems.

For Dutchess and Ulster, the advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. Tuesday to 1 p.m. Wednesday. The Mid-Hudson will see the most snow from an Alberta Clipper.

"The daytime snow is due to a cold front pushing into the Hudson Valley," explained Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather.

For Orange, Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester, the timing shifts to later, as the new Advisory doesn't go into effect until 4 p.m. Tuesday, running to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Southern Westchester's Advisory is even later: it goes into effect at 6 p.m. Tuesday. That's because, around sunset, a low pressure system coming from the Atlantic Ocean will bring heavier snow.

"Snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour are possible after dark on Tuesday, as the atmospheric dynamics look very impressive," Potter said.

Hudson Valley Weather's predictions range from 2-5 inches in southern Westchester to 6-10 inches in the Catskills.
