After School Programs Nurture Minds at Ossining's Roosevelt School

Unlocking Students' Potential Beyond the Classroom.

If you walk through the halls and grounds of Ossining’s Roosevelt Elementary during after school hours, you will find students engaged in a symphony of activities and programs that go far beyond the traditional classroom experience. From the melodious notes of the school band to the creative buzz in the art club, the vibrant discussions at Girls Inc. to the strategic moves of chess enthusiasts, the students at Roosevelt are on a journey of exploration and self-discovery.

Roosevelt Principal Katie Castellano Minaya offers a window into these diverse and impactful after-school programs, where education extends well past the final bell.

"At Roosevelt, we believe in providing a well-rounded education that goes beyond the classroom," Ms. Minaya explains. "To achieve this, we invite all 5th-grade students to participate in clubs both before and after school based on their interests."

A World of Possibilities

The scope of activities offered ranges from musical ensembles like the band, orchestra, jazz band, and chorus to artistic pursuits such as the art club. Additionally, students can participate in various interest-based clubs, including Girls Inc., Nature Girls Teatown, sports, gaming, chess, My Brother's Keeper, Roos Storytellers (in collaboration with Ossining Historian Joyce Cole), and the Boys and Girls Club. The school also extends support to academic clubs like the Spanish Club, Math Games, Cozy Up and Read, Homework, and Gaming. Notably, the school encourages students to propose their own club ideas, leading to the inception of unique clubs such as the Arts and Crafts Club and Snails Club, which Ms. Minaya said are currently in the expansion phase.

Muttigrees Club: Making a Pawsitive Impact

One club that has captured the hearts of both students and the community is the Muttigrees Club. Led by Dr. Brandon Beck and featuring the famous therapy support dog, Peaches, this club not only imparts lessons about animal rights but also actively participates in community initiatives. For instance, members of the Muttigrees Club recently conducted a fundraiser in collaboration with the Mike Risko Music School.

Fostering Academic Performance and Belonging

Beyond the exciting array of activities, the after-school programs at Roosevelt have a profound impact on students' academic performance, social development, and overall well-being.

"Our focus this year in Social Emotional Learning is on cultivating the leadership of our students and amplifying their voices," Ms. Minaya highlights. "Students help dictate programming, activities, clubs, and school improvement."

Mirla Puello, Director of Student Academics, further emphasizes the power of these programs, stating, "Our after-school clubs are more than extracurricular activities; they are catalysts for personal and academic growth. They empower our students to be active agents in their education and provide skills and values that extend far beyond the classroom."

The empowerment of students in shaping their educational journey fosters a profound sense of belonging, a crucial aspect of emotional well-being. This is actively measured using the Panorama survey. Ms. Minaya elaborates, "Involvement in clubs allows students to have an increased sense of belonging."

Accessibility and Inclusivity

Accessibility and inclusivity are cornerstones of Roosevelt’s approach to after-school programs. The school ensures that applications are available in both digital and print formats, accommodating both English and Spanish speaking families. Furthermore, Ms. Minaya points out that they target students and families who need clubs the most, and outreach efforts consider social-emotional needs, behavioral history, and academic standing from the previous year.

“To promote inclusivity, the school operates a rolling admissions process that extends into October and provides transportation after school, enabling more students to participate,” she added.

Community Partnerships: Strengthening Bonds

The key to the success and sustainability of Roosevelt Elementary's after-school programs lies in the active involvement and support of parents and the community. The school collaborates with numerous community partners to enhance students' understanding of community needs but also empower them to engage actively in community initiatives. Students use their voices to research various aspects, such as environmental sustainability, strengthening their community bonds and actively contributing to the welfare of Ossining.

Ms. Minaya’s dedicated staff and the supportive community partners ensure that these programs not only educate but also inspire, shaping future leaders and committed citizens. Thanks to Roosevelt Elementary School's after-school programs, students are not just learners but active participants in their own educational journey, exploring their interests, and finding their voices, all while strengthening their sense of belonging and community engagement.
