On October 20th, Anne M. Dorner Middle School will continue its tradition of taking part in Unity Day. Staff and students will make a commitment to the cause by signing the No Place for Hate pledge.
The student-led improvement program creates an opportunity to tackle bias and bullying while promoting a positive school culture. It aims to cultivate student leadership, unite the school community, and engage students and staff in active learning.
“This day would not be possible without the full support of our staff,” said Nicole Chaluisan, AMD Assistant Principal.

To further support the initiative, AMD’s Culture of Care Committee created an adaptable lesson that teachers can use to have a dialogue with students about the impact of hate. Additionally, the school day schedule has been modified to not only include anti-bias education, but also a field day event. During this time, the AMD community will connect with each other by participating in various activities that promote positive change. Students will also be given the opportunity to reflect on such topics in designated quiet places.
"One of my favorite memories from last year is of our staff and students having the opportunity to connect on Unity Day,” Ms. Chaluisan continued. “It was the first time we were able to interact with each other since the start of the pandemic, and it showed us how important these moments are for human connection.”

Ms. Chaluisan said she hopes AMD can emulate those same feelings again this year.
