“The Ancient Cumberland Tradition” Presented by R. M. Gramly, ASAA

It may be argued that the oldest culture to develop in what is now the United States is Cumberland, which began approximately 16,000 calendar years ago. From hearths in northern Alabama and southern Tennessee, Cumberland reached north to post-glacial tundra in the Hudson River Valley 1,500 years later - contemporaneous with now extinct mastodons - and revealed by discoveries in the Dutchess Quarry Caves.

Richard M. Gramly PhD is the director of the American Society for Amateur Archaeology (ASAA) and the publisher of Persimmon Press, a noteworthy small press focusing on North America archaeology. Dr. Gramly has excavated and published his findings from centrally important Paleoamerican sites including the Vail site in Maine, the East Wenatchee site in Washington State and the Sugarloaf (DEDIC) site in Massachusetts.
