YORKTOWN, NY — A Yorktown resident is now in federal custody after starting a law enforcement chain reaction in January.

Eric T. Bolton of 250 Underhill Ave. reported Jan. 15 that he had parked his 2017 Mercedes Benz C30 convertible on Summit Street at 5 a.m. and when he returned 20 minutes later it was gone, Yorktown police said.

Investigating the reported car theft, detectives learned the car had been abandoned in Ossining that morning after a crash. They concluded that it had not been stolen as alleged. After numerous attempts to reach Bolton, they applied for an arrest warrant March 21 on the charge of falsely reporting an incident.

Monday, Yorktown, Peekskill and Westchester County police went with the U.S. Department of Probation to conduct a home check on Bolton at his apartment. Arrested on the Yorktown warrant, he was taken to Yorktown police headquarters for processing. The federal probation officers checked the apartment and, police allege, found a loaded semi-automatic gun.

The federal officers alleged Bolton was not allowed to possess a gun due to previous felony convictions.
