Celebrating with a Tour of Ellis Island
Local children's book author to Tour Ellis Island with fans and young readers

On December 3rd, Westchester’s Jane F. Collen will be touring Ellis Island with readers of her award-winning Enjella Adventure Series. Her newest book, Sailing Back to Ellis Island was named a Silver Medal winner from the Mom’s Choice Book Awards in the first weeks of its release.
“I am so very excited to launch my new book right at the source of the inspiration: Ellis Island National Park!” said Mrs. Collen.
Over 40% of all Americans can trace their ancestors through the historic New York City landmark. The lead character of Mrs. Collen’s series embodies the spirit of the Island; Enjella is a mixed-race fairy with a rebellious streak and a can-do attitude.

Other characters in the series also serve as role models for readers who don’t often see themselves in books on the shelves of their classrooms. Enjella’s best friend Alicia, who joins her on their time-travelling adventure, lives with a fairy disability that causes her physical appearance to noticeably reflect otherwise innermost emotions. Alicia’s independence and wit help readers learn to view her transmutations as a unique gift.
Mrs. Collen, whose book series is based on two of her passions: history and fantasy, says that she wanted her stories to help young children learn to love reading. Relatable characters can help kids who are struggling with the logistics of reading. “I want my stories to get kids hooked on a good book and develop in them a lifelong love for reading! I want to pass on my own passion so children can understand the paths that become open through reading and harness that power for themselves.”

Echoing calls for positive stories about girl power and determination, Ms. Collen’s books have won more than 10 awards collectively. The trip to Ellis Island celebrates the completion of the 5th book in the series.
