Fighting chronic disease

Almost all "diseases of aging" can be traced to inflammation and the toxic load that builds up year after

Did you know that there is something that you can do right now, in your own home, that could help you reduce the possibility of developing chronic disease, help you have more energy, think more clearly, and even lose weight? Well, there is.

I have found that the majority of people don’t understand the purpose of doing a nutritional detox, and don’t understand how or why it is something they might benefit from. They are surprised to find out that the purpose is not to lose weight (although that often happens), but rather that it can have the real health benefits that come of clearing your body of toxic substances

Detoxification is a normal part of your body’s daily processes. Just like your heart beats, your lungs breathe, and your stomach breaks down food, your body is also working to remove toxins, pollutants, chemicals and wastes from your body every single day. The unfortunate truth is that we live in an extremely toxic world. We’re exposed to harmful toxins on a daily basis, whether it’s through the water we drink or even use in the shower, the electronics we use like computers and cell-phones that off-gas chemicals, even the chemicals and toxins that are present in items found all around our homes such as in cleaners, room sprays, shampoos, cosmetics and even candles.

We have food that’s loaded with chemicals, trans fats, synthetic sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup; There’s air pollution, water that isn’t pure and pristine, and our bodies simply can’t keep up. When our bodies get overwhelmed, those toxic chemicals no longer get flushed out and instead reside in our body’s tissues. Our bodies try to protect us from dangerous substances by setting them aside, surrounding them with mucous and fat so that they will not cause an imbalance or trigger an immune response. But what that means is that every single one of us has toxic substances in our fat. Yes, it’s true, there’s no chance that you don’t have some kind of toxins stored in your system in your fat cells. And the more toxic you are, the bigger those fat cells are!

The only way to get rid of these hitch-hiking toxins is by doing a detox. A detox allows the body to have a break from ingesting new chemicals and toxins, and during that break, is able to mobilize the existing toxic substances and dump them into the bloodstream so they can be expelled. Many people feel pretty gross at some point during their detox and that’s because their bloodstream is filling up with residual toxins. The more toxic you are, the crummier you will feel. But without this break, our bodies simply cannot get rid of the toxins that are already stored in our fat cells. Those toxins just keep building up until eventually our body develops inflammatory responses to fight off the intruders that the fat cells can no longer contain. Inflammation, which is a healthy immune response for fighting infections in the short term, then becomes chronic. Research has shown that inflammation is the #1 cause of chronic disease..cancer, diabetes, heart disease..pretty much all diseases that we think of as “diseases of aging” can be traced to inflammation and the toxic load that builds up year after year in our body.

The truth is, if we don’t take the time to help our systems clean out and give our digestive system a rest, we’ll continue having symptoms of toxicity; To be tired all the time, have belly bloat, experience crazy food cravings, have the 3 PM crash, continue with inconsistent digestion, our weight will keep creeping up, and we’ll still have a closet with 2 different sizes of clothes. And our risk for developing chronic disease will continue to increase.

It’s important to do the right kind of detox program, especially if you have never done one before. The lemon juice, cayenne and water for 10 days detoxes are not for someone who has not detoxed before (and I would argue they aren’t good for anyone). But a program that uses whole, seasonal foods and keeps you full and satisfied while helping to clear out toxins can work for you.
