Hundreds of volunteers protect the NY State Thruway; the weekend's crackdown continues till Tuesday morning.

The New York State Police have increased patrols to crack down on drunk driving and underage drinking this Halloween weekend in an effort to prevent tragedies caused by impaired drivers.

And they embark today on the 40th annual Pumpkin Patrol, aimed at preventing Halloween pranks and protecting motorists along the New York State Thruway, assisted by about 300 volunteers.

“Reckless shenanigans can lead to dangerous conditions on the road and cause disruptions for motorists,” said Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Bill Finch in an announcement about the Pumpkin Patrol.“The joint effort by Troop T and the dedicated volunteers across New York State will be essential to ensuring our roadway remains safe during Halloween weekend.”
