Herbert Loisti of Ossining

Herbert Loistl (Opa) of Ossining died on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Cedar Manor Nursing Home after battling a long illness. He was 78.

Born in Hohenfurth (Lahrenbecher), Czechoslovakia on September 20, 1936, he was the seventh of eleven children born to Johann Loistl and Katharina Prieschl. Herbert immigrated to the United States in 1964. On June 11, 1965 in a civil service he married Heide Ziegler in the U.S. and then in a church wedding on July 10, 1965 in Esslingen, Germany.

Herbert is survived by his wife, Heide, daughter, Christine Loistl-Pointer, son-in-law, W. Andrew Pointer, and granddaughter, Caitlin M. Pointer, all of Ossining.

Reminding him of the mountains at “home”, his favorite times were spent with family and friends along the Neversink River in the Catskills and Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks. An avid hunter and fisherman many memories were made on weekends and vacations there. He cherished trips back to Germany and Austria to visit his extensive family.

Herbert (Herbie, Uncle Herfu) will be remembered for his good nature and the sweets and breads that he baked. His family was a priority in his life and he was so very proud of them all including his siblings, nieces, nephews, and in laws. Many hours were spent playing soccer and singing in choirs with his six brothers and good friends in Germany.

Herbert’s earliest years were spent on the family farm in Czechoslovakia. When he was just ten years old, WWII had ended and the family of German decent was forced to return to Germany, settling in Nördlingen. There, Herbert studied baking as an apprentice and eventually received his Meisterbrief in baking, a skill that served him and his family well throughout his life. He worked at bakeshops in Germany and then Yonkers and Hartsdale, as well as serving as food service director at Marymount College for 21 years. For several years before illness took his ability to work, he owned his own bakeshop.

A private memorial service was held on Saturday, April 25, 2015.
