Hazardous Outlook, Trick-Or-Treat Window: Hudson Valley Halloween

For a short time Halloween could be windy not rainy, but hazardous outlooks and wind advisories have been issued.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — There are three hazardous weather outlooks issued for the Hudson Valley, which could see damaging winds with heavy rain and even thunderstorms. But there's also some hope.

It's not 100 percent sure, but there's a distinct possibility that it won't be raining between 4 and 8 p.m.

"Guidance is currently suggesting the Hudson Valley splits the gap between the steady rain showers we are likely to see during the early afternoon, and the heavy downpours associated with the arctic cold front to our west. This is the ‘window of opportunity’ we’ve been talking about for 2 days… where trick or treating could be mainly dry… just warm and windy," said Alex Marra and Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather. "While we wouldn’t place any bets in Vegas on this… it does look like this could break just right for us."

Take the umbrella. Take the umbrella. South of I-84 you may not have to use it if it plays just right. You'll be plenty warm.

The National Weather Service has issued similar hazardous weather outlooks for Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties.

A strong frontal system will impact the area with a line of showers and possibly embedded thunderstorms tonight. There is a marginal risk of severe weather with the main threat being from damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph.

The NWS posted another for the mid-Hudson Valley, plus a wind advisory.

Periods of heavy rain are possible through tonight which may result in localized flooding in low lying and poor drainage areas. Area rivers are also expected to rise. In addition, the Storm Prediction Center has placed the region in a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms tonight with damaging winds the main threat.

"But beyond the ‘Trick or Treat’ weather… this storm will be a meteorological treat. A strong low pressure system will drag an arctic cold front through the region, and out ahead of it, temps will SURGE into the upper 60s and possibly low 70s," Marra and Potter said. "Then the squall line pushes through around midnight, and the bottom falls out."

Yep, there's a freeze watch already issued for late Friday night through Saturday morning for Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester.
