To the Editor:

If you pay even casual attention to the news, you know that the US government will default on
its debt as of June 1. Why should this matter to you? It just sounds like lots of political posturing
in Washington.

Congress routinely raises the debt ceiling to pay the bills that the federal government has
already incurred. They did so 3 times during the Trump administration without drama or threats.
But the Republicans see this as an opportunity to squeeze money out of the budget before they
will agree to pay the bills. Where will they squeeze that money from? They won’t say. They have
hinted that they won’t touch Social Security or Medicare. So what else can be cut? How about
Veteran’s benefits? The SNAP program, which provides some measure of food security for
millions of families? Maybe they’ll decided that our air and water don’t need protection, or that
our food supply and medications don’t need to be to be safe. Maybe they think our public
schools receive too much money. Perhaps our roads and bridges don’t need repair. In other
words, programs and services that we all depend upon are all on the chopping block.

Please call Congressman Mike Lawler (202- 225-6506) and tell him to stop the nonsense and
vote for a clean debt ceiling bill to prevent a meltdown of our (and the world) economy.
