Letter To The Editor: Gearity Supports Hispanic Community

As a representative of the Hispanic community, I endorse Victoria Gearity’s re- election as Mayor of the Village of Ossining. During five of my six years on the Board of Trustees, I served the community alongside Victoria. During that time I was impressed with her support of the Hispanic community.

In 2016, when the earthquake hit Ecuador, Victoria stepped up and helped to coordinate and work with members of the community to obtain donations and store them for transport. Additionally, in December of 2016, she supported a resolution for a bill that would allow New York State to issue a driver's license to
any state resident, regardless of immigration status.

When addressing Spanish-speaking residents, Victoria speaks in Spanish to the best of her ability. During a recent interview with Ossining Padres Hispanos, she spoke candidly and passionately about the need for safer and more affordable housing for Ossining. Following the arrest of Diego Puma, she spoke with both English and Spanish media, sharing a message about our community values. Seeking to help Ossining’s immigrant community feel safe reaching out to local officials whose mission is to protect all Ossining residents, regardless of documentation status.

She has also positively contributed to the community with her ability to create public engagement. Victoria has accomplished this in several ways. When she took office she began walking the streets, all of them. Each week she walked several blocks and invited all to join her. She began holding a regularly scheduled day for open office hours with the Mayor, inviting anyone to come in and talk with her, no appointment needed.

Overall, she is doing a great job and continues to brighten our community and contribute many positive changes.

Como representante de la comunidad Hispana, apoyo la reelección de Victoria Gearity como Alcaldesa para la Aldea de Ossining. Durante cinco de mis seis años como Consejal en Ossining, serví a la comunidad junto con Victoria. Durante ese tiempo, quedé impresionado con su apoyo a la comunidad Hispana.

En 2016, cuando el terremoto azotó a Ecuador, Victoria dio un paso al frente y ayudó a coordinar y trabajar con miembros de la comunidad para obtener donaciones y almacenarlas para el envio a Ecuador. Además, en Diciembre de 2016, apoyó una resolución para un proyecto de ley que permitiría al estado de Nueva York emitir una licencia de conducir a cualquier residente del estado, independientemente de su estado migratorio.

Al hablar con residentes hispano-parlantes, Victoria se esfuerza para hablar en español. Durante una entrevista reciente con Ossining Padres Hispanos, ella habló cándidamente y con fervor sobre la necesidad de alojamiento seguro y asequible en Ossining. Después de la detención del arresto de Diego Puma, ella habló con medios de comunicación en español e inglés, compartiendo mensajes sobre los valores de nuestra comunidad: ayudar a que la comunidad inmigrante de Ossining se sienta segura al contactar a autoridades locales cuya misión es proteger a todos los inmigrantes de nuestra comunidad, sin importar su estado de documentación.

Ella también ha contribuido positivamente a la comunidad con su habilidad de crear un pueblo involucrado. Victoria ha logrado esto de varias maneras. Cuando ella asumió el cargo, comenzó a caminar por las calles de todo Ossining. Cada semana cubrio varias cuadras e invitó a todos a unirse con ella. Ella comenzó a tener horas de oficina abiertas, invitando a cualquiera a entrar y hablar con ella, sin necesidad de una cita.

En general, ella está haciendo un gran trabajo con nuestra comunidad y contribuyendo con muchos cambios positivos.
