Letter to the Editor: Gov. Cuomo Should Sign Municipal Energy Bill

The writer is the mayor-elect of Ossining.

Wednesday at midnight is the deadline for Governor Cuomo to sign the bipartisan “Municipal Energy Aggregation” bill that has been sitting on his desk for several weeks.

I sincerely hope that Governor Cuomo will sign this bill which is so supportive of his efforts to encourage shared services.

This pilot project would allow Westchester municipalities like Ossining to potentially save millions in energy costs for residents and small businesses by aggregating our buying power.

The work of Sustainable Westchester to harness the intellectual capital of leaders from across Westchester for the benefit of the 39+ member municipalities, is a shining example of how sometimes we can best serve our constituents by working across municipal lines.

I am proud to have served on the board of the Northern Westchester Energy Action Consortium, Sustainable Westchester’s predecessor. I now serve on the advisory committee to support the newly elected Board of Directors, as Sustainable Westchester transitions to an exciting new phase. A phase that I hope will include the opportunity for Ossining residents to take advantage of energy savings that may be realized if Governor Cuomo signs the “Municipal Energy Aggregation” bill by Wednesday at midnight.

I am pleased to have had the chance to partner with Ossining’s Senator David Carlucci who is a co-sponsor of this bill in the Senate.

Sincerely,
Victoria Gearity
