Monday Fire At Springvale Apartments Is 2nd In A Month

The Montrose Fire Department was called out late Monday afternoon.

MONTROSE, NY — For the second time this month, a fire at the Springvale Apartments off Route 9A brought out firefighters and ambulance crews from Montrose and several neighboring communities. An invalid was rescued and several people were transported to nearby hospitals.

The Montrose Fire Department was dispatched at about 5:30 p.m. Monday. Finding a quick and rapidly-spreading fire, Montrose officials called for mutual aid quickly.

"The fire could have been a lot worse if it wasn't for quick fire department action," said Montrose Fire Chief Scott Gilbert.

Fire was running up the rear wall of the three-story building, and heavy on two floors when they got there, the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department said on their website. Firefighters warned each other when the fire burned a large hole through the floor of the second-floor apartment.

There was fire damage to three apartments and water damage to multiple apartments. Three people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries believed to be smoke inhalation.

Many residents in the elder housing complex were unable to return to their homes. The Red Cross and Springvale assisted them with emergency shelter and supplies.

According to a commenter on the Croton Fire Department's Facebook page who expressed concern about two fires at Springvale in three weeks, no one was home in the apartment where the fire started.

Emergency responders helped the Montrose FD from Buchanan, Cortlandt, Mohegan, Ossining, Peekskill and Verplanck.

The fire Nov. 8 displaced 19 adults, according to the Red Cross, which was also at the scene Monday helping the victims with emergency needs.

The cause at this time is still under investigation but appears to be non-suspicious, possibly electrical, Gilbert said.
