Music modality supports students in Ossining’s RISE program

Music activities, structured songs and musical improvisations improve cognitive, social and emotional development. By Anthony DiNoto

The Ossining school district has partnered with the Music Therapy Institute of the Music Conservatory of Westchester to support elementary students with special learning needs. Students in the RISE Program will receive music therapy services in a group setting within their classrooms.

“I believe that music therapy is a wonderful way to increase communication skills, enhance attention and memory, improve body and spatial awareness and identify and express emotions,” said Kate Matthews, Director of Cultural Arts.

Supported in part by a grant from Arts Westchester, the services will run for 24 weeks during the 2022-2023 school year, beginning the week of October 16.

Ms. Matthews believes students will find joy in participating in these sessions, as music is a universal language that appeals to everyone.

Through a variety of music activities, structured songs and musical improvisations, the students will be encouraged to play instruments and explore the elements of music as they relate to cognitive, social and emotional development, and improving communication skills. The students will be provided opportunities to support self-expression and self-esteem which will lead to better interactions with their peers.

“I’m very excited for the launch of the Music Therapy program,” said Superintendent Dr. Ray Sanchez. “I’m also confident that the highly engaging structure of the services will motivate our special needs students to build and enhance skills in all areas of developmental growth.”

The Music therapists facilitating this service hold master’s degrees in music therapy and are Board Certified through the Certification Board for Music Therapists.
