Obituary: June Ekelund, Retired Librarian At Brookside

June A. Ekelund (née Hunter), a former resident of Ossining and a resident of Peekskill, NY, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2020. June was born in Freeport, NY on December 30, 1947, and was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Minna Hunter. She was 72.

June was a graduate of the State University of New York at Oneonta, with a BA in Education. She married Harry J. Ekelund on September 28, 1975 in Ossining. She worked for many years as a school librarian at Ossining’s Brookside Elementary School, where she enjoyed sharing her love of books and reading with children. In recent years, she was a resident at Drum Hill in Peekskill, NY. June cherished the community and her friendships there, where she also discovered the joy of writing poetry.

June is survived by her two sons Bryan (Kendra) and Andrew (Michelle), and her two grandchildren Ryan and Lilliana. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harry J. Ekelund, in 2014.

Due to present conditions and restrictions on social gathering, there will be no visiting hours. A private burial service will be held only with immediate family. A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date, when June’s beloved extended family and friends can gather to remember and celebrate her life. Arrangements handled by Dorsey Funeral Home, Inc.
