Ossining to Appoint New Park School Principal

The Board of Education is scheduled to approve the appointment of Emilia Macias-Capellan on February 24, and she starts in Ossining May 10.

The Board of Education is scheduled to approve Emilia Macias-Capellan on Feb. 24 as the new principal of Park School.

Macias-Capellan, who has experience as a principal, assistant principal, coach and teacher, will start in Ossining on May 10. She will replace Cynthia Bardwell, who retired in early January.

Macias-Capellan currently works in the Mamaroneck School District as a dual language literacy specialist. She has been with the district since 2014, serving as assistant principal of Chatsworth Avenue School, assistant principal of Hommocks Middle School and principal of Hommocks Middle School before her current position.

"Ossining is pleased to welcome someone of Ms. Macias-Capellan’s caliber to lead our pre-k and kindergarten educators and students at Park School," Superintendent Raymond Sanchez said. "She has a background in instructional leadership, with experience and specialties in English as a new language, dual language, literacy development and culturally responsive education, all of which will benefit Ossining’s youngest students."

Prior to working in the Mamaroneck School District, Macias-Capellan spent 18 years in New York City schools as a teacher, coach, assistant principal and director of instruction. She was a classroom teacher from 1996-2002 at P.S. 124 in Manhattan. From 2002-2004, she was a school coach in reading and writing at P.S. 198, also in Manhattan. She served as assistant principal of P.S. 124 from 2004-2010. From 2010-2014, she was director of instruction at DREAM Charter School in New York.

Macias-Capellan, who lives in New Rochelle, has a Master of Science degree in elementary education from Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has an advanced certificate in school administration and supervision, specializing in elementary and middle school administration, from Baruch College of the City University of New York.

In the near future, the Ossining School District will arrange a time for the new principal to meet students, families and staff.
