OSSINING, NY — Ossining town officials have cancelled the big fireworks event scheduled for Friday at Louis Engel Waterfront Park.

"We love fireworks, but we love you more,” Town Supervisor Dana Levenberg said in the announcement. “We want to make sure we do everything we can to protect our school staff and students so everyone can have a successful return to school, especially as we celebrate our essential workers this Labor Day weekend. While we are disappointed, we know this is the right move in light of the Delta Variant and a recent uptick in COVID hospitalizations."

After learning that Westchester County cancelled its two large fireworks events (planned for Thursday at Kensico Dam and Saturday at Hudson Hills), town officials took a closer look at their Fireworks, Concert, Food Truck and Craft Beverage plans.

While a typical Food Truck Friday/Concert series event draws no more than 500 participants, the Ossining fireworks tend to draw much larger crowds (between 4,000-6,000 in recent years). This makes fireworks a riskier proposition than the typical summer Friday events, officials said.

Community transmission levels are high across Westchester County, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
