"Given the nature of the occurrence, the chief has met with members of local clergy and the NAACP, in addition to questioning individuals who may have witnessed anything in the park," village Mayor Victoria Gearity and town Supervisor Dana Levenberg wrote in a joint letter to residents on Friday.
"A noose hanging from a tree is no different than a burning cross or a painted swastika. It is a call to racist violence, and it has no place in our community. As the investigation unfolds, we will learn if there is any criminal act to be charged and prosecuted," they said.
