Ossining High School Principal Receives Administrator of the Year Award

OHS Principal Josh Mandel chosen as Empire State Supervisors and Administrators Association's Region 2 Administrator of the Year.

Ossining High School Principal Josh Mandel received the Empire State Supervisors and Administrators Association’s Administrator of the Year award for Region 2, which includes Westchester and Putnam counties.

Mr. Mandel has been principal of Ossining High School since 1998 and has been an educator in the district since 1994. He first served as principal of Roosevelt School and then Brookside School. Before that, he taught in New York City.

“This award represents the work of the district, OHS administrators, teachers, parents and community members, staff, and most importantly, students,” Mr. Mandel said. “Each of my accomplishments was achieved because of the OHS community.”

Regional Association of Supervisors and Administrators President Michael McDermott, who presented the award in late May, cited numerous successes and achievements in academics, athletics and the arts at Ossining High School under Mr. Mandel’s leadership. RASA is the name of the state organization’s Region 2 group.

The Middle States Association of Elementary and Secondary Schools recently recognized the school for Programs of Distinction in music, school counseling and world language. OHS was the only school to receive three awards. In 2012, OHS received the Intel Star Innovator and School of Distinction recognition. For the past four years, Ossining was named a Best Community for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. In sports, the OHS Girls Basketball team won the state championship for the past three years.

“Clearly these varied and impressive successes could only come about because of the committed and skillful leadership of the principal, Josh Mandel,” Mr. McDermott said.

In nominating Mr. Mandel for the award, Ossining Superintendent Raymond Sanchez described him as a “servant leader” whose mission is to “serve the students and community of Ossining first and foremost.”

“Mr. Mandel is truly beloved by the students and staff at Ossining High School,” Mr. Sanchez said. “He maintains an open-door policy with all and is respected by his colleagues, community, and students.”
