Ossining Musicians Showcase Musical Talent at White Plains Festival

The Ossining High School Orchestra performs brilliantly at the first annual White Plains Orchestra Festival.

Students from Ossining High School’s (OHS) orchestra program had the opportunity to showcase their musical talents at the First Annual White Plains Orchestra Festival hosted by White Plains High School on November 18th, 2023. The festival brought together orchestras from across the region to perform and receive feedback from experienced musicians and music educators.

The OHS Orchestra, under the direction of music teacher Nicholas Feigenbaum, performed two challenging pieces: Rumanian Folk Dances by Bela Bartok and Allegro Molto from Symphony No. 40 by Mozart. The students impressed the audience with their technical proficiency and musicality.

Mr. Feigenbaum, who brings with him energy and excitement into his new role as conductor of the OHS orchestra, said the participation of his students in in the White Plains Orchestra Festival was a valuable learning experience.

“They had the opportunity to perform for a large audience, receive feedback from experienced musicians, and learn from each other,” said Mr. Feigenbaum. “The festival also provided the students with a chance to make new friends and share their love of music with others.”

Following their performance, the OHS orchestra students had the opportunity to participate in a masterclass with teacher and double bassist Anthony Pinelli of the Paul D. Schreiber School in Port Washington. Mr. Pinelli provided valuable feedback to the students on their technique and interpretation of the music. In addition to the masterclass, the students also received comments from Dr. Susan Davis, a renowned music educator. Dr. Davis praised the students’ hard work and dedication, noting students' excellence in musicianship.

Mr. Feigenbaum points out that the success of the Ossining High School orchestra can be attributed, in part, to the strong foundation that students receive in Elementary School and Middle School, as well as the continued support of the Director of Cultural Arts Ms. Kate Matthews.

“Our students’ impressive performance at the White Plains Orchestra Festival reflects not only their musical talent but also the dedication and support they receive throughout their educational journey,” Ms. Mathews remarked. “"Music has the power to connect, inspire, and create lasting memories, and we are proud to nurture a vibrant musical community at Ossining High School."

The OHS orchestra performs regularly at school concerts and events and will continue to participate in regional festivals and competitions.
