Ossining Schools Implement Firearm Storage Resolution
The District leads measures to ensure student safety through secure gun storage, updated policies, and engagement with the community.
In a proactive move to enhance student safety, the Ossining Union Free School District (OUFSD) announces the adoption of a comprehensive resolution addressing the secure storage of firearms within households. Recognizing the urgent need for preventive measures, the OUFSD Board of Education and Superintendent are taking bold steps to update policies and engage with the community.
The resolution, spearheaded by Interim Superintendent Mary Fox Alter, underscores the critical role secure firearm storage plays in safeguarding schools and students. Disturbing statistics, such as the estimation that 4.6 million American children live in homes with at least one loaded, unlocked firearm, emphasize the urgency for action.
"Student safety is our number one priority, and the adoption of this resolution reflects our proactive stance in addressing the pressing issue of secure firearm storage within our community," said Ms. Fox-Alter.

The Board directs the Superintendent and staff to update the Student Handbook, incorporating information on the significance of secure gun storage. This will include legal obligations for parents and guardians to securely store firearms, stressing the importance of keeping guns unloaded, locked up, and separate from ammunition.
Multilingual Parent Communication:
A letter will be sent in both English and Spanish to parents and guardians and will communicate the importance of secure gun storage in preventing unauthorized access by minors. It will also outline the legal consequences for parents and guardians when a child gains unauthorized access to an insecurely stored firearm. This information will be included in registration materials to ensure widespread awareness.
Collaborative Efforts with Local Agencies:
The Board and the Superintendent commit to working closely with local law enforcement agencies, health agencies, and non-profit organizations. The aim is to collaborate on increased efforts to inform District parents about their obligations concerning the secure storage of firearms in their homes. This partnership underscores the shared responsibility of all adult stakeholders in ensuring the safety of students, teachers, and staff.
"By updating the Student Handbook and engaging with the community, we aim to empower families with the knowledge and tools necessary to prevent unauthorized access to firearms,” Ms. Fox-Alter added. Together, we are building a safer environment for every student in the Ossining Union Free School District."
Ms. Fox Alter noted that New York State law requires adults to securely store firearms where a child 16 years old or younger resides, and by aligning with the state, OUFSD demonstrates its commitment to proactive and effective measures against the threat of gun violence.
The Ossining Union Free School District remains at the forefront of initiatives aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of its educational community.
