Ossining Senior Earns Two Medals at Westchester ACT-SO Competition
Devynn Hernandez's Exceptional Artistic Talent Advances Her to National Level, Impressively Winning Gold and Silver in Drawing and Painting
Devynn Hernandez, a senior at Ossining High School, has achieved remarkable success at the ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics) competition by earning a silver medal in the painting category and a gold in the drawing category. Her impressive performance has secured her a spot in the national competition to be held in Boston this summer.
Founded in 1978 as a major initiative of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), ACT-SO provides a forum through which African-American youth can demonstrate academic, artistic and scientific prowess and expertise through various after school programs. The year-long experience culminates with the “Olympics of the Mind” competition and awards ceremony where students showcase their projects and are recognized for their achievements.
Devynn's painting, which earned her the silver medal, is a stunning depiction of a woman in the mark position, ready to begin a race, but the woman is portrayed as a cheetah. The painting captures the strength and power of the cheetah, highlighting the determination and perseverance required for any race, be it on a track or in life.

In the drawing category, Devynn's gold-winning piece is from the perspective of a woman blocking a punch from another woman. The black-and-white drawing captures the intensity of the moment, showcasing her skill and precision.
Ron Whitehead, Devynn’s art teacher, said the young artist consistently challenges herself to push beyond her limits, both technically and conceptually.

Kate Mathews, Director of Cultural Arts at Ossining High School, also praised Devynn's artistic abilities, saying, "Devynn's work is truly stunning! She has a unique perspective and style that sets her apart from her peers. We wish her all the best as she heads to Boston this summer to compete at the national level.”
