Ossining students win big at WESEF 2022

OHS comes away with 57 awards

Congratulations to all the winners from the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair! Ossining High School Science Research students came away with a total of 57 awards.

“With every additional Ossining student name called, our students were in total amazement, shocked with their overall accomplishments and over the moon with happiness,” said Valerie Holmes, who co-teaches the Science Research Program together with science teacher Angelo Piccirillo.

While the awards are a wonderful takeaway for the scholars, Ms. Holmes said winning is not a priority.

“We use competitions to motivate students, but the real goal is about the skills they pick up during the process. Our real goals are to create independent thinkers, foster creativity, and produce students who are data literate and effective communicators,” she said. “it's nice when they learn a little science along the way too.”

Mr. Piccirillo agreed.

“It’s great to get them outside, get them talking to professionals who are judges and to exchange ideas and research findings. It’s also a good way for them to get feedback and learn how they can proceed from here,” he said.

The WESEF 2022 competition, which involved 550 students from 40 different schools throughout the region, recognized winners during an in-person ceremony held on March 24, 2022, at Somers High School.

The WESEF is an opportunity for students to participate in hands-on science through a forum showcasing student research for those in Westchester and Putnam Counties. The top students from the fair are eligible to advance to the REGENERON International Science and Engineering Fair, which will take place in Atlanta, Ga., August 8-13, 2022.

OHS has had a student finalist attend the summer science fair since it began its Science Research Program in 2001.

“It never ceases to amaze me the work that our scholars put into their science research” said Superintendent of Schools Ray Sanchez. “I could not be prouder of our scholars and their work, not to mention the teachers and advisors who assist them. We truly have one of the best science programs in the state. For them to have another amazing showing at WESEF is wonderful. Congratulations to all our winners.”
