Two members of the Ossining Spartans competed in The Great Hudson River Swim on Saturday May 24. Hosted by NYC Swim (www.nycswim.org), this open water race covers 1.6 miles from Pier 45 to Battery Cove Yacht Club, finishing in the shadow of One World Trade Center. 14 year old Kate Flynn and 13 year old Alex Carrazzone braved 59 degree waters in wetsuits, allowed for competition due to the chilly temps. Despite their young ages, the pair were expected to do well, with Flynn seeded second overall, and Carrazzone 27th out of 221 entrants.
There was no disappointment as Kate Flynn claimed the third place overall women’s finisher spot and eighth place overall with a 0:26:38 time. Alex Carrazzone was the first place finisher for men 19 and under with a time of 0:30:53, good enough for 42nd out of 181 total swimmers to complete the race. Since the inception of this event in 2005, only 8 racers aged 14 or under have finished this course. Carrazzone and Flynn now hold the fastest recorded times for swimmers of their respective ages in this event.
