Ossining’s Malone Continues Family Tradition

Pride junior has followed in her sister's footsteps quite nicely in girls lax and field hockey.

Ossining junior Molly Malone knew that she had a lot to live up to having a sister that stood out in both field hockey and girls lacrosse.

That sister is Kate Malone, who was a two-time all-state field hockey player and Ossining’s Female Athlete of the Year for the Class of 2010. She is now entering her sophomore campaign as a field-hockey player at Providence College.

The younger Malone, who plays midfield in both sports, isn’t complaining about living in her sister’s shadow though. That’s because she readily admits that she never would be entering her junior year as an all-section player in both field hockey and lacrosse if it wasn’t for the lessons her older sister taught her.

Take for instance what she claims was her biggest moment on the lacrosse field, which was reaching the 100-career goal plateau this past spring.

“I knew it was coming, sometime,” Molly Malone said. “He [coach Dan Ricci] really didn’t tell me when. I kind of had a feeling I was around there. I kept missing the net, missing the net and finally I got it and it was just such a relief.”

Molly Malone credits her sister for being able to reach such a prestigious milestone in just her sophomore year.

“I played with her on the varsity for two years on the lacrosse team and she really taught me everything that I know,” Molly Malone said. “So she played a big part in all my goal scoring and my development as a player overall. She scored over 200 goals in her whole high-school career, so she really put me on the right path to doing things like that in lacrosse.”

What also has helped Molly Malone in her progress as a girls lacrosse player is Ricci, who has success in any sport he coaches, be it girls lacrosse, girls basketball or football.

“He definitely pushes us,” Molly Malone said. “He sees our potential in everything that we do. He knows how good we can be and the potential of the team overall. He’s really brought that out in us. It’s coming together more and more every year. With him as a coach I just see the program excelling because he is just such a great coach.”

As for field hockey, like lacrosse, the younger Malone again credits her sister for giving her the knowledge needed to play and excel at the sport.

“I didn’t probably play the sport until I was in seventh grade,” Molly Malone said. “My sister played the sport, she told me to try it and she showed me everything I had to do. She was a great field-hockey player and what helped her was that she used to play roller hockey. She had the stick skills already down and they just carried over into field hockey. She really taught me different shots and how to move the ball.”

As for what sport she’d like to play in college, Molly Malone said that she hasn’t made a decision. As for what college she'd like to attend, she said that staying somewhere in the northeast appeals to her.

“When I am in that sport, in that season, I feel like I like that sport better,” Molly Malone said. “During the spring, I feel like I like lacrosse better and during the fall I like field hockey better so it’s a hard thing to choose. I haven’t really decided yet what I want to do.”
