From the thrill of meeting members of Westchester County’s specialized emergency rescue teams to hearing their stories of complex, high-risk situations, students agreed that visiting the Department of Emergency Services was one of the highlights of My Brothers Keeper Camp, one of Ossining Schools’ summer program for students entering grades 3 – 8.

“It was one of those days you truly had to experience to understand,” said one of Ossining’s staff members. “The energy, curiosity, engagement, and enthusiasm throughout the room made it incredibly special.”

Community collaborations are one of the unique aspects of Ossining Schools’ summer camps. Created with care by the district’s certified teachers and experienced staff, and hosted in district’s gyms, classrooms and open spaces, Ossining Schools Summer Camps offered programs for all interests and ages.

“From enrichment opportunities and academic programs to camps, athletics, and much more, our students had countless opportunities to learn, grow, explore and connect,” said Ossining Superintendent of Schools Mary Fox-Alter. “It was a summer filled with meaningful experiences and lasting memories for our students.”

Ossining’s Summer Learning Program was a favorite among the district’s future kindergarteners, featuring regular visits to Teatown Lake Reservation’s Grow Wild Outside program, along with story times, art classes and plenty of games.

“Our classrooms have been filled with students building their skills through engaging lessons, hands-on activities and creative projects,” said one of Ossining’s staff members.

Students entering grades 3 through 8 enjoyed Ossining Schools’ Co-Ed Sports Camps, building on the basics of wrestling, basketball, track and field, soccer, flag football and volleyball. Not only did campers learn and grow, but Ossining High School student-athletes also volunteered their time to help with the sports camps.

At the AMD Intro to Broadcasting Summer Camp, middle school students gained hands-on experience in video production, broadcasting, storytelling and media creation. Participants in the Girls Inc. camp flexed their leadership and building character skills, while those enrolled in the school’s Summer Arts Academy explored design and identity by painting, coloring and creating collages of expressive self-portraits.

All programs helped students prepare for the school year ahead.

Teens in Ossining High School’s Freshman Academy built connections and confidence through bowling, hiking and other adventures. Rising seniors prepared for their next steps at a College Essay Writing Workshop.

While summer is not over yet, Ossining Schools’ programming is beginning to shift toward the new school year, with welcome-back-to-school events scheduled for all schools. As the new school year approaches, students will bring Ossining Schools’ camp experiences—and plenty of new confidence and enthusiasm—back to the classroom and into the year ahead.
