Playoff Hoops Round-Up: Ossining & Croton Daily Sports Digest, Feb. 20

Ossining girls roll

No. 1 Ossining started defense of its Section 1 Class AA girls basketball title in fine fashion when it defeated visiting Mahopac 73-34 in the opening round of the Section 1 Class AA tournament Feb. 17.

Saniya Chong led Ossining with 17 points, 11 assists, five rebounds and four steals. Teammate Destini Walker registered 14 points and five rebounds.

Danielle Gervacio contributed 12 points and Andra Espinoza-Hunter tallied eight points for the Pride.

Ossining will now host No. 9 Horace Greeley in the quarterfinals Tuesday, Feb. 21.

The winners of each quarterfinal contest will advance to the Section 1 Final Four at the Westchester County Center in White Plains Feb. 27-March 4.

 

Tiger girls win

No. 7 Croton-Harmon continued its fine season with a 44-41 triumph against visiting Westlake in the opening round of the Section 1 Class B tournament Feb. 17.

The Tigers, who earned their first sectional victory in seven years, won the game with a great comeback as they at one point trailed by 16-4 in the first quarter.

Grace Mulligan led the comeback effort by scoring a game-high 17 points.

Mulligan and her teammates will play now at No. 2 Blind Brook at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Boys playoff hoops

Croton-Harmon's Ian Thom was on fire, scoring a game-high 24 points in addition to garnering four assists and three steals in the No. 6 Tigers' 66-56 triumph against visiting Pawling Feb. 17.

Teammate Wes Turner contributed 16 points and five rebounds to the victory.

Croton-Harmon will now play at No. 3 Woodlands in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Keon Ervin, Sam LaCour and Stiven Espinoza-Hunter had 11 points each for No. 14 Ossining in the Pride's 55-54 loss to host Mahopac Feb. 17 in the opening round of the Section 1 Class AA tournament.
