“Speak Out” with Assemblywoman Sandy Galef Highlights PANS/PANDAS
Assemblywoman Galef puts a spotlight on a rare disease
Assemblywoman Sandy Galef speaks with guests Lisa Wolk-Kilion and Trish Ehrlich, on her television program, “Speak Out.” Both Lisa and Trish have been major advocates for PANS/PANDAS ever since their sons were diagnosed with this disease at a young age.
PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) is when an infectious trigger, environmental factors, and other possible triggers create a misdirected immune response results in inflammation on a child’s brain. In turn, the child quickly begins to exhibit life changing symptoms such as OCD, severe restrictive eating, anxiety, tics, personality changes, a decline in math and handwriting abilities, sensory sensitivities, and more. Both Lisa and Trish share personal stories about how the disease has affected their children and themselves.
“I did not know anything about (PANS/PANDAS) until (Lisa) walked into my office,” said Galef. “I think that this is an illness that everyone needs to know about because it affects our children. Lisa and Trish are very knowledgeable about the subject and I immensely appreciate the commentary that they provided.”
