Mr. Carter was 89.

Joseph W. Carter - a lifelong Ossining resident & WWII Naval Veteran passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2014. Joe was born in Ossining on January 13, 1925 and was the son of the late Joseph J. and Ella (Hockins) Carter. He was 89.

Joe was a graduate of Ossining High School class of 1942 and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and saw action on Omaha Beach on D-Day as a Boatswain Mate 1st Class on the landing Craft Infantry (LCI-415).

Upon receiving his Honorable Discharge from the Navy he married Dolores Jeanne Brown of Ossining on 11/17/1946.

He was employed by the N.Y. Telephone & advanced to a supervising engineer. While employed by NY Telephone he attended Westchester Community College at nights and received his AAS in1960 . He was an avid outdoorsman and participated for many years in Ossining Rod & Reel Club, Ossining Bowman and was Scoutmaster of Ossining Troop #47.

After retiring from N.Y. Telephone in 1982 he became active in The American Legion Post #506 and served as the Post Commander for 12 years.

Mr. Carter is survived by his sons Jay (Julie) and Brad; 2 granddaughters Jess and Jackie.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9PM at Dorsey Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral service Monday at 10AM at St Paul’s on the Hill 40 Ganung Drive, Ossining, NY 914-941-6627 Interment at Dale Cemetery.
