Worker On I-684 Hit By Car Monday

The accident caused traffic to back up on the highway Monday.

SOUTHEAST, NY — A worker picking up traffic cones at a New York transportation department work site was hit by a passing vehicle Monday afternoon on the northbound side of I-684 in Southeast.

At 3:07 p.m., state troopers were dispatched to mile marker 26 northbound on Interstate 684 in the town of Southeast, a mile north of the rest area.

Their initial investigation concluded that Richard N. Russo, 48, of North Salem, NY, was northbound in the right lane operating a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado, when he struck a worker contracted by the New York State Department of Transportation.

The road worker, identified as John Fitzpatrick, 41, of Bronx, NY, was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with serious but believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The Interstate in that area was partially closed northbound until 8:10 p.m.
