1. Oyster Bay Harvests Kelp To Boost Water Quality, Marine Health (patch.com) — Oyster Bay residents are seeing local waters benefit from an expanding kelp harvesting program at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and nearby marinas. Town officials, environmental groups, and Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club members are teaming up to grow and harvest thousands of feet of sugar kelp, improving water quality and teaching youth about sustainability close to home.
2. Overnight Closures On Northern State Parkway Eastbound For Weeks: NYSDOT (patch.com) — Drivers in and around Oyster Bay should prepare for several weeks of overnight closures on the eastbound Northern State Parkway starting at Exit 36A by the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway. The state’s resurfacing project will reroute traffic onto Route 135, Old Country Road, the Long Island Expressway, and Route 231, affecting many local commuters’ late-night and early-morning trips.
3. High school roundup: Lacrosse, baseball, softball, badminton and track and field results (newsday.com) — Oyster Bay’s girls lacrosse team pulled off a dramatic comeback, erasing a 12-8 deficit and winning 13-12 in overtime against Plainview-Old Bethpage behind Chloe Romano’s game-winner. The roundup also includes other Long Island high school results in lacrosse, baseball, softball, badminton, and track.
4. Heralds capture 11 awards in N.Y. press contest (babylonbeacon.com) — Oyster Bay readers can take pride that local coverage, including an in-depth piece on “keeping the oyster in Oyster Bay” and breaking news reporting on nearby Sea Cliff politics, helped Herald Community Media win 11 statewide press awards. Judges praised the Oyster Bay environmental story for making them care deeply about local people, place, and oysters without overblown writing.
5. Veterans benefits and information seminar (jericho-news-journal.com) — Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino is teaming with Nassau County officials to host a free Veterans Benefits and Information Seminar on Monday, May 11, at 11 a.m. in the Syosset-Woodbury Park Community Center. Veterans and their families can learn about disability compensation, survivor benefits, burial benefits, and more, with counselors on hand for questions and follow-up appointments.
