Hazardous Waste Drop Off Established

Town of Oyster Bay has teamed up with the Environmental Protection Agency toestablish a hazardous waste disposal center for storm affected residents.

Beginning Monday and running through Nov. 30, residents may safely dispose of unwanted hazardous pollutants at the TOBAY Solid Waste Disposal Complex in Old Bethpage. Residents can come to the center from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on weekdays.

Materials that can be brought for disposal are the same for the S.T.O.P. program, including solvents, drain and oven cleaners, spot removers, small aerosol cans, rechargeable and button batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs, thermostats, paint, motor oil, antifreeze, and outdoor gas grill propane tanks, said Town officials.

“The significant cleanup process following Hurricane Sandy has the potential to be hazardous to our environment,” said Town Supervisor John Venditto in a statement Monday. “With many residents cleaning up or, in some cases, cleaning out their homes, there may be a large amount of household hazardous waste that many residents may not be aware how to dispose of properly and safely."
