Only Confirmed Ebola Patients Will be Brought to Glen Cove
Glen Cove Hospital is One of Eight Treatment Centers as Required by NY State
The Ebola Treatment Unit at Glen Cove Hospital is ONLINE AND READY. The third floor was chosen because of its isolation capability, it has a separate elevator, and it was completely empty. The unit is completely sealed off from the rest of the hospital and is equipped with its own air handling system as a precaution even though it is not an airborne virus. The unit can treat up to 2 patients simultaneously. Transfer of a patient will be determined by the CDC and State health officials.
The unit will be locked and carry a high level of security. It has a Point of Service laboratory which will be used ONLY for testing of specimens taken from the patient in the unit. The laboratory technician doing the testing will be wearing Hazmat Level 2 gear to conduct the analysis. The patient will be cared for by trained clinician volunteers. More than 80 % of the team caring for the patient is from the Intensive Care Units of different specialties (pediatrics, obstetrics, dialysis, respiratory). The team will be staffed by four RNs and one doctor per sift: Currently there is a staff of 60 nurses and 20 doctors. There will be absolutely NO contact with any other personnel or patients in the hospital. The treatment team will stay with the patient until the patient is released. They will have not interaction with other patients. If we do have a patient, the usual treatment period is 3-4 weeks.
Bodily waste will be treated and packaged for transportation from the Hospital. The Glen Cove Hospital staff is highly trained and their protocols meet or exceed CDC standards; the team treating the Ebola patient is trained to level 3 HazMat. The CDC visited Glen Cove Hospital Oct. 27, 2014, and deemed the staff the best prepared operation throughout the Northeast.
Suspicion of Ebola Virus: fever of more than 101.5; determine recent travel; malaise; headache vomiting, diarrhea. It is transmitted only by handling bodily fluids: saliva, semen, sweat, vomit, feces, blood, breast milk, syringes, and needles.
We are waiting for confirmation of a date to hold a Town Hall meeting in Glen Cove City Hall.
