50 Abused Brooklyn Bunnies Up for Adoption This Weekend

The Saturday adoption event, called Buns N Roses, will feature a photo booth and a cameo from Cleo the Bunny (of Instagram fame).

GOWANUS, BROOKLYN — Another batch of the approximately 275 Brooklyn bunnies famously rescued from snowy, STD-infested squalor in Gowanus last year are fully rehabilitated and ready to find forever homes, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) announced Wednesday.

The original tally of rescued bunnies was actually more around 180, but a few of the females popped out little ones, as bunnies do, before they could be spayed by the ASPCA.

Anyway, come this Saturday, 50 members of the Gowanus bunny hive will be trucked from an animal shelter in Pennsylvania, where they’ve been staying, to an adoption event at the Gymnasium of the Candidate Assessment Building on East 20th Street in Gramercy Park, Manhattan.

New Yorkers can stop by to cuddle a bunny or two — or, ideally, adopt them — between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

“After more than a year of recovery, these rabbits are ready to leave their past behind and start new lives in loving, safe homes,” Howard Lawrence, vice president of the ASPCA Anti-Cruelty Group, said in a statement.

According to the ASPCA, Saturday’s adoption event will include ”a social media photo booth where adopters can commemorate the addition of a new bunny to their home” and a special visit from Instagram star Cleo the Bunny.

A few things to remember before showing up Saturday, via the ASPCA:

There is a $25 adoption fee which includes a cage and water bottle. All rabbits are spayed or neutered. Potential adopters should bring one government-issued photo ID (i.e. driver’s license, passport, military ID, or non-driver ID), proof of address, and contact information for a personal reference. Adopters must be 21 or older.
