Choban Elektrik plays folk music from the Balkans in a psychedelic jazz-rock setting. Using vintage keyboards and amplifiers, the band brings the sound of the 1960's and 1970's to folk tunes from Albania, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. The band has performed at the NY Gypsy Festival this past September and is releasing its debut CD this winter, featuring vocalist Eva Salina Primack (Slavic Soul Party, AE) and violinist Jesse Kotanksy (Which Way East). The band consists of Jordan Shapiro (Project/Object, Astrograss) on keyboards and guitar, Dave Johnsen (Project/Object, Mahavishnu Project) on bass, and Phil Kester (Heldin, Xylophone People) on drums.
