First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum: Connecting Cultures

Tonight's free monthly event features performances, workshops and lectures highlighting the city's ethnic diversity. Here's the line-up. 

Music 5–6 p.m. Los Colombian Roots features some of New York’s most prolific Colombian musicians, fusing traditional folklore and instruments with the rhythms of Cumbia, Porro, Puya, Tambora, and Bullerengue.

Gallery Talks 5:30–9 p.m. Museum Guides and staff host spotlight discussions of works in the collection.

Interact with Raw/Cooked artist Heather Hart’s installation The Eastern Oracle: We Will Tear the Roof Off the Mother. After signing a waiver, visitors wearing flat, rubber-soled shoes may climb the rooftop. Free timed tickets available at the Visitor Center beginning at 5 p.m.

 Artist Talk 6 p.m. Playing House artist Ann Agee discusses her period room activation. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m.

Dance 6 p.m. Forces of Nature Dance Theatre presents original pieces that blend dance forms including modern, traditional West African, ballet, and house. Presented in partnership with BAM Dance Africa.Free timed tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m.

Music 6–8 p.m. Brown Rice Family serves up a fusion of jazz, Afrobeat, reggae, rock, Latin, hip-hop, and funk.

Hands-on Art 6:30–8:30 p.m. Create a sculpture inspired by the Connecting Cultures installation. Free timed tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m. 

Curator Talk 7 p.m. Chief Curator Kevin Stayton speaks about the installation Connecting Cultures. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 6 p.m.

Dance Party 8–10 p.m. DJ Spooky spins a multimedia set including alternative hip-hop and electronica. Copresented by Weeksville Heritage Center.

Book Club 9 p.m. New York–based author Haley Tanner reads from her debut novel, Vaclav & Lena. A book signing follows.

Music 9 p.m. The avant-garde Stone Forest Ensemble fuses hip-hop vocals, electric strings, African percussion, and Chinese lute.
