The Sesame Flyers International Calypso Tent was established in 2000 and as a natural outgrowth came the Calypso Monarch Competition which is now in its sixth year. This Friday, August 24, the new Calypso Monarch will be crowned when the finals of the competition is held. However, this year, organizers have decided to “step up” the production with a show which features the triple prong of cultural expression of the Trinidad & Tobago – calypso, steelband and limbo. Reigning Calypso Monarch. Mervyn “Dr. Witty” Carter will be defending his title against 10 other contenders vying for his crown. They include: Gene Toney, Spider, Lord Kent; De Culture; Judy Henry; Nolan "Poison Dart" Daniel; Groovy D; Sapodilla; Lady Tantalizer and QP.
