The Debutante Hour / Schwervon! / Choban Elektrik

The Debutante Hour keeps its musical roots in American country, blues and vaudeville while letting their lyrics run the gamut from absurd to sublime. Susan Hwang and Maria Sonevytsky switch fluidly between accordion/keys and hobo drum kit while Mia Pixley holds it down on the cello as the unconventional power trio harmonizes about planning, worldviews and works of literature, with the occasional swerve into a Carpathian mountain stomp.

Schwervon! is a two piece rock band. Nan Turner (originally from Washington state) and Matt Roth (originally from Kansas) met at the Sidewalk Cafe in downtown Manhattan (NYC). At the time Nan was playing in the all-girl indie pop band Bionic Finger and Matt was performing as Antifolk acoustic troubadour Major Matt Mason USA. After a series of “Jam Dates” at the now defunct Context Studios, a handful of lofi indie rock sketches were formed based around such banal topics as arguing couples on the street and food.

Choban Elektrik is the new name for the band formerly known as "Electric Balkan Garage". The band is a trio performing traditional Balkan folk music on vintage keyboard instruments, played in a psychedelic and improvisational setting. The band will be releasing their debut full length CD in April 2012.
